Wise words. I've not suffered a loss yet but that is one of my biggest fears as I hate losing at anything!

If I do suffer a loss it's this type of stuff that will help me to learn from it and come back a stronger fighter... I'm hoping to keep winning for a while yet though! :-)

Couldn't agree more. It's a different ball game when head shots on the floor are allowed and completely changes your normal ground game.

A ground and pound ref stoppage should probably come a bit quicker in amateur as it's all about getting the experience but you need to learn to deal with the risk of head shots.

I fight 'semi pro' and there has been times where I have been very comfortable fighting off my back on the ground. In 'Pro' there's no way I want to be on my back, I want a good game off my back just incase i get into that position but I want to be on top in 'pro'. You need to make sure you don't fall in to a habit of being too comfortable in guard because even if your winning fights from guard at 'Semi pro', it's likely this may well change when you turn 'Pro'.

Yep totally agree MMA is about a full mix of arts not just grappling. Hopefully more shows will adopt the newer amateur rules to help advance our fighters in the proper fashion.

Great Blog i had no idea that in Amateur fights headshots of any kind are not permitted. Kind of negates any real experience of stand up fighting if you can't get punched square in the face. Same with the ground game if you’re not looking to defend getting smashed in the gob you’re not going to get a real grip of what a proper competitive MMA fight feels like.

I’ve always found the gym to be the place to work technique without being worried about getting hurt and if you feel you want to step up and compete in a real MMA fight be it Amateur or Professional you know the risks involved and fully understand them.

just my two cents not had a Amateur fight but would love to get to a point where i could and I’d be bitterly disappointed if there wasn't any headshots allowed to me it wouldn't be a full test of the skills used that would get me to the point of being ready for an Amatuer fight.
